2017 was a year of change for the ABODA (WA) Inc/IMSS Festivals. With the recommendations from the Community Forum of 2016 and the subsequent survey results from our general community taken into consideration, ABODA launched into a complete overhaul of the festivals.
The removal of publicly announced results was very high on everyone’s wish list. The educational value of the practice has long been questioned and we had finally been able to listen to our community and support the change based on the data we had collected. The ability to have workshops and connection with the adjudicators, face to face feedback for conductors with experts, the opportunity for students to see and hear other ensembles perform, the use of two venues simultaneously were also among the developments. The changes were many and certainly in some cases needing work, but the overall response from those involved was incredibly positive.
The IMSS team, ABODA (WA) team and the support team at Churchlands Senior High School managed to create two memorable festivals, with a great deal of positive community spirit. We look forward to developing this festival format in 2018 and into the future.
